Anna – February 2024
This surfboard belonged to my beautiful son, who passed away 5 weeks before his 18th birthday in 2021. He loved surfing, although he did not get to do it much (although we live close to the sea, it is not a surf beach). A few days before he passed away, he talked about wanting to go surfing soon. As a result, this surfboard means so much to me. It represents my son’s adventurous spirit and his love of the sea. Every year we used to go camping to the same place, which my son loved. He loved to surf and fish there. It was one of his favourite places. Our family continue to go to this place every year, which has been hard in his absence but also special as we can often feel his energy there. We always take his surfboard with us and make sure I clean it, put new wax on it and take it out for a ride in the ocean waves. I am not a surfer, but he inspired me to push myself out of my comfort and try it. I took a surf lesson last year and then took my boy’s board out. There was a special moment, when the family all rode a single wave into the shore (me on my son’s board). By having his board there, and doing something that he loved, it helps me connect with him and know he is smiling and my heart is full for that moment.
