In the midst of the tumultuous era of World War II, here is a story of resilience, camaraderie, and a touch of home in the most unexpected places. This is the tale of my grandfather, an Italian soldier whose journey through Africa was marked not only by the trials of war but also by a steadfast companion: his trusty portable coffee machine, a cherished moka. Born in the Sardinia in 1914, my grandfather understood the significance of espresso in his daily life. It wasn't just a beverage; it was a ritual. As he boarded the convoy ship to Africa, he made a decision that would shape his experience in ways he could never have imagined - he would bring along his beloved moka machine.Through the rugged terrain of North Africa, where shifting sands and scorching sun tested the endurance of men, the moca was a beacon of familiarity amidst the brutality of war. In the silence of the desert nights and the chaos of battle, the aroma of freshly brewed espresso provided solace, offering a moment of respite and connection to his roots.
